Rain Stays Away All Weekend at Mission Inn; Two Events Left
|
|
The Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour continues to have great luck with the weather as our two-day event at Mission Inn's Las Colinas course went off without a single weather delay on either Saturday or Sunday. We got to see how players handled two days of competition.
As always, some players step up at these major events. Eric Baker won for the second time in three evets as he played two steady rounds and posted 74-75-149 to lead the way in Championship Flight. Current points leader Chad Frank came back after an opening 80 to shoot 75 and tie with Dennis Brady for second place. It was Brady's first event competing with the regula Championsjhip fight players. He normally plays only in the Senior flight. So, he picked a good time to double up as he also finished second in the Senior Championship flight. Steve Maddox held onto his lead in the points race in the flight by shooting 73-70-143 for the low score of the weekend.
A Flight continued to produce close finishes. The points race could go down to the last event (we only have two events left). Sylvester Warren III shot a steady 79-77-156 for the low score of the weekend. The double points pretty much clinched a berth in the Tour Championship. He held off Jacksonville AGT tour member Nick Dewit who took second place with a great second day round of 75 to go with an opening 82. Robbie Robinson was next with 80-78-158. David Parker (82-77) and Ed Paterniti (78-81) tied for fourth at 159. Robinson, Parker and Paterniti finished 1-2-3 in the Senior A Flight.
First year player Dan Gardner is playing some good golf these days. He topped the field at Mission Inn in B Flight and moved into the top three in the points list. He posted 87-80-167 to finish three strokes in front of Ben Hamby and Matt D'Auria. Matt opened with 91 but came back with a nice 79 Sunday to climb into the second place tie. Ben shot 87-83. They were one ahead of Chet Rakowski in fourth with 87-84-171. In Senior B Flight, first day leader Chet Parker (79) shot 89 on Sunday and managed to hold off Ben Hamby at 170 and Chet Rakowski at 171.
C flight continues to shuffle leaders at the top of the flight. This time it was Mike Salik who took over first place in Player of the Year race--by one point! Wayne Weaver won the tournament at Mission Inn with rounds of 90-86-176. Salik was second with 91-87-178. Bryan Bowman was just one more shot back in third with 88-91-179.
James Rearden continud his domination of D flight by shootn 93-100-193 to take the top spot in D Flight. Ian Halliwell was second with 196. Broderic Johnson, battling with Alberto Esperon for second in Player of the Year, took third with 104-94-198.

GREAT COURSE PLUS GREAT CONDITIONS EQUAL LOW SCORES & HAPPY GOLFERS!
|
|
Ideal weather and terrific course condtions greeted Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour members at Orange County National's Panther Lake course. Every flight featured outstanding performances and many low scores.
Eric Baker led the way in Championship flight with a solid round of 35-35-70 to capture the top prize. Travis Griffin fasioned an even par round of 36-36-72. Great playing on the course that will host the PGA Tour Final Q-School later this year. Cory Walker and Jason Cranford were tied fior third with 74's.
A flight found the course much to theri liking. Stacy Banach and Steve Cleary led the way as 11 players broke 80. Stacy bounced back, in a big way, from a bad round at Disney to shoot sizzling three under 33 on his opening nine at OCN. He kept it going as he closed with 37 for a 2-under score of 70. Steve Cleary was all smiles as he finished his round--an equally impressive score of 71--only to find that he would have to settle for second place on this day. Great golf, fellas! Newcomer David Hatch and veteran Paul Cope tied for third with 75's. Three more players tied at 76 with John Marshall winning the scorecard match for the fifth place prize.
Brad Kondo had the hot hand in B flight. He topped Dan Gardner and Arnie Guerra who shared second place. Subernia Johnson posted 79 to finish fourth. She continues to hold the top spot in the B flight Player of the Year race.
Chas McIntyre Wins C Flight at OCN Panther Lake
C flight continues to produce close finishes each tournament. This time it was Chas McIntyre's turn at the top (pictured above). He carded a fine 83 for an unusual three stroke victory over Chace Petersen and Brian Mariani. Michael Damewood of the Jacksonville tour finished fourth with 88.
Tim Sobitz III, playing for the first time in 2010 didn't waste any time in claiming a victory. He topped the D flight with 86. Brodric Johnson finished second with 89.
In senior play, Cory Walker and Steve Maddox tied for first with 74. Cory won the playoff to take the first place prize. David Hatch was playing his first event and he captured first place with his 75 in senior A. Jeff Bradshaw was just one shot back with 76. Robbie Robinson took thrid (78) and continues to hold the points lead for the Player of the Year. Arnie Guerra's 77 was tops in senior B flight. Greg Takacs was a distant second with 82.

Disney Magnolia A Tough Test
|
|
Mickey Mouse Was Ready For the Edwin Watts Tour
Disney World is often called "The Happiest Place on Earth". After Saturday some of the Edwin Watts Tour members might disagree. While the course was in excellent condition, it offered up a stern test for all. The Championship flight found the going tough as 75 was the low score from the 7000 yard tees. There were three 75's led by Eric Baker, John Bessette and a guest for the day, Charlie Grace. Bessette found himself 5 over after three holes, but steadied himself and posted a blistering 33 on the back nine to earn his place in the playoff. The playoff started on #10, a usually mild par 5. But a tough pin placement proved more difficult than expected as Grace was able to take the first place prize with a par. Travis Griffin grabbed fourth place with a 77.
In A flight, only 2 players managed to break 80 as the Magnolia course lived up to its reputation as the toughest of the Disney courses. David Parker edged past Dennis Cargo by one shot. He shot 78 to Cargo's 79. There was a logjam at 81 as four players tied for third. John Marshall took third on the match of scorecards and Andy Baker won the fourth place prize.
The best performance of the day might have come in B flight as Dan Gardner scorched the front nine with a 35. It followed an opening 45 on the back nine (he played it first). The turnaround gave him a one shot victory over flight leader Subernia Johnson who shot 81. Tim Sobitz and Bob Santee were next with 83's.
Chace Petersen captured the C flight with an 87. It also pushed him into the lead in the Player of the Year race. Hosh Dietrick finished second with 88. Wayne Weaver and Brian Mariani were next with 90. The C flight produces some of the closest competition week in and week out and is fun to watch.
James Rearden widened his lead in D flight with another victory. He shot 98 to ease past Brodric Johnson's 99. Alberto Esperon was another shot back with 100. More good competition!
Gary Allen captured 2nd place in Senior A at Disney
In senior play, Steve Maddox shot the low round of the day, a 74 to top the field in the Senior Championship flight. Senior A also went to Dave Parker's 78. Gary Allen (pictured above) was second. Tim Sobitz captured the Senior B flight with 83. It was one better than four players tied at 84--Kevan Brown, Greg Takacs, Chet Rakowski, and Arnie Guerra.
NEXT EVENT: It doesn't get any easier as we head up the road to take on the Panther Lake course at Orange County National--on July 24.

Falcon's Fire Starts Second Half of Season
|
|
Falcon's Fire is a Tour Favorite
After a fun day at ChampionsGate, it was back to the business of qualifying for the Tour Championship in Hilton Head. It was hot at Falcon's Fire, and as usual, we got some good performances on one of our favorite courses on the schedule.
Bill Foster continued his fine play this season as he took first place in Championship flight with a one-over 73. He edged past Cory Walker by a single stroke. Rob Kempinski took third place with 75. Bill, Cory and Rob also play in the Senior Championship flight at each tournament. Steve Maddox carded an even par 72 to top them in the Senior flight.
A flight saw some fine scores as well. Stacy Banach shot an even par 72 to top 19 players in the flight. He won by 2 strokes. Steve Cleary posted 75 to finish third, followed by John Marshall (76) and David Parker (79). The Senior A flight went to Jeff Bradshaw. His 78 was good enough for a one shot win over David Parker. Brad Bettin took third with 82.
Brad Kondo ran away from the B flight as he posted his season best 76. He finished four clear of Arnie Guerra, who would have won most any other day with his fine 80. Bob Santee (82) and Rick Whitman (84) rounded out the prize winners in B flight. Arnie's 80 was good enough for first place in Senior B and Rick Whitman took second.
C flight continues to be perhaps the most competitive of all our flights. This week was no exception. Chace Petersen turned in 83 and it stood up as Brian Mack followed with 84. Michael Damewood from the Jacksonville tour took home third place with a nice 85. And first year player Gordon Gibbs grabbed fourth place with 86. It is fun to watch this flight week in and week out as they seem to be evenly matched up and down the line.
Justin Cranford took first place in the D flight and he was followed by James Rearden wh kept his hold on the top spot in the race for Player of the Year in the flight. Justin has played well enough that he will move to C flight at his next event.
You might have noticed that many of our players over 50 choose to compete in regular and senior flights. Tour rules allow seniors (over 50) to pay $25 extra to get into a regular flight as well. This week it paid off for severao players. Just another reason the Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour remains "central Florida's Tour of Choice".
NEXT EVENT: We're going to Disney World! The Magnolia course to be specific--on July 10.

Father-Son Team Wins Bob Mirus Memorial
|
|
The sixth annual Bob Mirus Memorial 2-person team event was held at ChampionsGate again this year. It was a nice break from the individual competition and the chase for points. But just like the regular events, we still needed a playoff to decide the winer of the first flight. The father son team of Andy and Eric Baker tied with Kevin Jarrett and Jeff McPherson with 8-under par 64. So it was back to the 18th hole for the playoff. The hole was halved the first time through and so back they went for a second try. This time, it was Andy and Eric that came away with a birdie to take the top prize.
64 turned out to be the score of the day as Ed Paterniti and David Parker shot 64 to take the second flight. It was good for a 2 stroke victory over the team of Jim Kenny and Tom Dillon. Marvin Pressley and Eric Evans were next at 68.
Eric Evans putts as Marvin Pressley looks on during Bob Mirus Memorial team event.
In third flight it was the team of Rick Whitman and Bob Santee finishing on top with an even par 72 in the scramble format. They were three clear of second place Subernia and Brodric Johnson (75). In flight four Dan Seidenfaden and Dana Turgeon posted 77. They beat Chase Forsyth and Joe Keunast by 2.
The event was established in 2005 in memory of tour director Tom Mirus' father Bob. It is always played at Fathers Day weekend and is ther midpoint of the regular season. It is a nice change of pace before the chase for national tournament invitations takes center stage in the second half of the season.

Reunion A Big Hit With Members
|
|
REUNION RESORT A BIG HIT WITH TOUR MEMBERS
Reunion resort's Arnold Palmer course (Legacy) replaced Victoria Hills at the last mnute. It proved to be a big hit with the Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour members. The course was in magnificent condition when we played on June 5.
Chad Frank shot a steady 36-36-72 to lead the way in Championship flight. Bill Foster was next5 with 74. Jason Cranford was third with 75 and Eric Baker finished on 76. Foster's 74 was good enough to top Patrick Dwyer by 3 shots for the Senior Championship prize.
In the A flight it was hot shooting Tom Dillon who topped the field with a fine round of 73--including six birdies. It was three shots back to the second place finisher, Joel Adams. Next in line were Robbie Robinson (77), Dennis Cargo (78) and Ed Paterniti (79).
First year member Dan Gardner had the hot hand in B flight as he posted 78 to take top honors. Subernia Johnson, coming off a big win at the 2-day event at Grande Pines, stayed in good form as she came in with 80 for second place. Third was Matt D'Auria (83) and Ernie Hallare (84). they are also first year members. Job well done!
C flight continues to provide exciting competition. Josh Dietrick shot 86 to dege past Chase Petersen's 88 by 2. They were the only scores under 90 in this flight. Chas McIntyre and Bryan Bowman came next at 02 and 93, respectively.
Youth prevailed in the D flight as 13-year old Justin Cranford fired a 91 to beat Brodric Johnson by two shots. Alberto Esperon was the thrid D flight player to break 100 as he turned in 99.
Senior A flight produced the only playoff. Points leader Robbie Robinson posted 77 and waited to see if it would hold up. David Wellard was in the last group of the flight and when he posted his 77, it was back to the course for some free golf! It only took one hole for David to prevail when Robbie missed a putt to extend the playoff. Robbie did hold on to the top spot for Player of the Year at this point. Ed Paterniti shot 79 to take thrid place and stay in second in the POY race.
Only one stroke separated Ben Hamby and Rick Whitman in Senior B flight as Ben's 85 was good for the victory.
Next up is the Bob Mirus memorial 2-man Scramble at ChampionsGate National.

Grande Pines A Difficult Test
|
|
The first major of the season was contested at the Marriott Grande Pines in Orlando. 88 players went in search of double points at this top notch facility. The going was tough as scores were high on day one. Only 5 players managed to break 80; 2 in Championship flight, 2 in A flight and one in Senior Championship. But the scores were bunchd tightly together in all flights.
In Championship flight it was Ray Vigeant's 77 that was best on Saturday followed by Bill Shufelt at 79. Robbie Robinson held a one stroke lead over Dennis Cargo with 78 to Cargo's 79 with a number of players close behind between 80-82. In B fli ht it was Anthony Gutierrez posting an 83 for a two shot lead over Arnie Guerra and Subernia Johnson. C flight belonged to____on day one. C flight might be the most fun to watch as all the players in this flight are evenly matched and anything can happen. D flight is small but equally competitive with James Rearden leading after day one with 98. Two players were two back at 100 and another at 101.
Steve Maddox shot the best score in any flight with a 75 in the Senior Championship flight. It was good for a six stroke margin over Dennis Brady. Doubling in senior A as well, Robbie Robinson's 78 lead by three over Ed Paterniti. Arnie Guerra was tops in senior B with 85.
By Sunday, everyone seemed more comfortable with the perfectly groomed course and ideal playing conditions. Chad Frank and Bill Foster led the charge up the leaderboard in Championship flight as they shot 74 and 73 respectively. Frank's 74 propelled him to the victory with a 155 total, as well as into the lead in the Order of Merit Points List. Bill's low round let him collect 2 prizes for the day as he took the "second day money" game and his 11-stroke improvement from the first day pushed him to a second place finish overall at 157. John Bessette finished third on 159 and Matt Tickle and Jim Hammons were next with 160.
Steve Maddox had the low score of the weekend, 74-75-149, to take top honors in the senior Championship flight. No one else came close as Bill Foster was second with 157.
Dennis Cargo started the day one stroke out of the lead in A flight, but a solid round of 74 pushed him to a four shot win over Justin Walker, a member of the egolf tour in Charlotte. Dennis totalled 153 for 36 holes. Walker's 76 on Sunday included a 2-umder 34 on the front nine. First round leder Robbie Robinson was tied for the lead after 27 holes, but fell off the pace stretch and finished in a tie for fourth at 163 with Joel Adams. His score was good enough to hold on to first place in the senior A flight as he beat Ed Paterniti (166) by three. Tom Dillon matched Cargo's 74 on Sunday, but he ha too much ground to make up after an opening 86 on Saturday. Still, he jumped all the way into thrid spot and took the "second day money" game in A flight.
Subernia Hohnson Takes Over Lead in B Flight
B flight belonged to Subernia Johnson. She shot steady rounds of 85-83-168 to claim a two stroke victory over Chet Rakowski. Anthony Gutierrez came next, two more shots back at 172 and Arnie Guerra was fourth with 174. Matt D'Auria shot 85 Sunday to win the "second day money" game. Rakowski and Guerra also finished 1-2 in the senior B flight.
Chet Rakowski Takes Aim at Grande Pines
C flight sorted itself out Sunday with some solid performances. Mike Salik followed an opening 93 with a fine 82 on Sunday to post 175 and claim a two shot victory over Chace Petersen, 177. It was another three shots back to Russell Outram who shot 90 each day. D flight was the closest of all as the top three players were separated by two strokes. James Rearden took top honors with 98-97-195. First day leader Brodric Johnson followed an opening 95 with 101 to finish at 196. Ian Halliwell was next at 197. Great stuff from the D flightf!
It appears as the new points system will make the Order of Merit races very interesting all season. With 900 points for first place in the majors, every winner at Grande Pines took over first place in their flight. With the second major in August, the invitations to theTour Championship in Hilton Head and Pinehurst will go down to the last event--just how it should be.
NEXT EVENT is June 5 at Victoria Hills.

Bessette Returns to Tour--Wins at Southern Dunes
|
|
It was a perfect day for golf at Southern Dunes. Warm temperatures, light wind and excellent course conditions greeted over 80 players. The only bad luck of the day came on the ride to the course as the "green dart" aka Robbie Robinson's van broke down on the side of the road near Celebration. But in the end, it all worked out as we made it to the course on time and the part on the van was still under warranty--so a little inconvenience was a small price to pay in the end.
John Bessette returned to the Edwin Watts Tour after a seven year hiatus. He picked up right where he left off, winning the May 1 event at Southern Dunes. He fired a 1-over 73 on the long demanding Southern Dunes course. He beat second place finisher Doug Powell by two strokes. There were 23 players in the Championship flight last week, so it was a well earned victory. Sean Marlowe and BJ Johnson were another stroke back with 76's.
John Marshall took over the top spot in A flight with his victory. His second win of the season was by one stroke over Steve Cleary. It was Cleary's first event since moving up to A flight. Marshall shot 76, Cleary 77. Joel Adams followed in third with 78.
The B flight went to Geoffrey Bride. He shot a sizzling 77 and coasted to a three stroke win over Rick Whitman (80). It was another two strokes back to Bill Robertson and Brad Kondo in third place. Newcomer Walter Renton shot 82 to take the C flight in his first event. Chris Benedetti and Bryan Bowman tied for second sith 86's, followed by Mike Marini at 89. Mike is also a first year player.
Alberto Esperon claimed his first victory of the season by edging past James Rearden in D flight. Alberto's 94 was good for a one shot win. Still James remains in first place in the Points List.
D Flight points leader James Rearden putts at Southern Dunes
In the senior flights, Joe Ondo was tops in Senior Championship with 74. David Parker and Ed Paterniti needed an extra hole to decide the Senior A flight. They each shot 79. Parker won on the first playoff hole. Rick Whitman took the Senior B flight with 80. Bill Robertson was next with 82.

Cargo, Mack & Brady Become first 2-Time Winners in 2010
|
|

Grand Cypress Big Hit With Tour Members!
Grand Cypress proved to be everything we expected and more! The course was in superb condition and the service was first class in every way. If you missed it, you missed a great day.
Dennis Cargo, Brian Mack and Dennis Brady became the first two time winners in 2010. Cargo led the way in the A flight with a solid 77. He was two better than Steve Johnson and Stacy Banach. They were the only ones under 80 in A flight as the course was long and challenging.
Mack found the course to his liking as he blistered the Nicklaus tribute to the Old Course at St. Andrews with a round of 80. He topped Mike Salik and Wayne Weaver by four strokes. On any other day, 84 would win the C flight, but not this week.
Gill Foster Wins Playoff with BJ Johnson
Brady's victory came in the senior Championship flight. He recorded a fine 73 that included a 1-under 35 on the front nine. It was good for a one stroke victory over Bill Foster's 74. Foster (pictured above) 74 was good enough to tie for first place in the regular Championship flight with BJ Johnson. They headed out for a playoff and Bill prevailed quickly on the first hole as BJ's approach shot hit the green but backed up into the water. Both are first players on tour and making their mark early. Black Bear winner John Ward (and current points leader) missed the playoff by one. The Championship flight is the largest flight on tour and the competition is outstanding each week.
The B flight was loaded with good scores. Arnie Guerra was the best of them all as he posted a terrific 77. But he needed every putt as he edged past Steve Cleary and Bill Robertson who each shot 78. Geoffrey Bride and Tim Sobitz also broke 80 as they came in with 79's.
Newcomer bob Miller shot lights out in the D flight as he shot an 84. He coasted to a six shot win over James Rearden (90). Alberto Esperon was two strokes further back with 92.

Cranford Tops Field at Duran
|
|
Tour veteran Jason Cranford captured the second event of the 2010 Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour played at Duran. He topped a large field of 21 players in the Championship flight with his 4-over par 76 in mild, but breezy conditions. The course was in excellent condition and was challenging for everyone. Jim Hammons finished second with 77. Three players were another stroke back. They included Chad Frank, Mike Menyhart and first time player BJ Johnson. It is great to see the numbers continue to grow in the Championship flight.
Andy Baker tees off in A flight at Duran
John Marshall led the way in A flight. He cared a 78. It was god enough to edge past Tom Dillon by a single stroke as they were the only A flight players able to break 80 this day. Ed Paterniti shot 80 to claim third place. In the B flight Craig Stone, playing in his first event this year after claiming the senior B title at the Tour Championship last November, shot 80 to capture the top prize. He was three better than Chet Rakowski. Paul Cope was third with 85.
The C flight continues, week in and week out, to be the most competitive flight on tour. This week it was Russell Outram who topped everyone with his 87. Randolph Hill and Chas McIntyre tied for second with 89. In all, seven players were within six strokes of the winning score.
The D flight belonged to James Rearden. He coasted to a six stroke victory with a score of 98. Last year James finished second in the Player of the Year race that came down to the last event. He looks like he is going to make a push for the top spot this year. Newcomer Lawrence Blunk was second with 104.
In the senior flights, Steve Maddox shot 74 to take first place in the senior Championship flight. He was three better than Jim Hammons. Last time out at Black Bear, Steve was in a three way playoff before losing on the first extra hole. He made sure he didn't need extra holes this time.
Senior A flight went to Ed Paterniti who shot 80. He beat David Parker and Robbie Robinson by a single shot. Parker won the second place prize on the scorecard match. Craig Stone's 80 was three better than Chet Rakowski in seionr B.
NEXT EVENT: April 17 at Grand Cypress.

Return To Black Bear A Big Success
|
|
John Ward, Dennis Brady Take Top Honors in Regular and Senior Flights, Respectively

The Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour returned to tradition and opened its 2010 season at Black Bear GC in Eustis. The tour opened every season at Black Bear until 2006. It was great to be back at a course that is such a big part of tour history. Many of this year's members were not playing on tour when we last played this Pete Dye course.
Playing conditions were ideal with mild temperatures and very light winds (for Black Bear). Considering the cold winter we had, the course was in good condition for our event.
John Ward topped the field in the Championship flight with a 2-over par 74. It was good for a one shot victory over Ray Vigeant. It was another four strokes back to a three way tie for third that included Chad Frank, Mike Menyhart and Doug Powell. The A flight produced a host of low scores on opening day. Dennis Cargo led the way with a fine 75. He was two shots clear of Tom Dillon, Dave DiMauro, and John Marshall. This flight usually provides some of the best competition on tour.
In the B flight, Paul Cope took first place on the strength of a nice round of 83. He edged past Rick Whitman who carded 84. First year player Matt D'Auria was next on 86. He tied Dan Lambdin, but took the third place prize on the match of scorecards.
Wayne Weaver putts at Black Bear
The C flight produced the season's first playoff as Brian Mack, Wayne Weaver and Chas McIntyre all came in with 87's. The playoff lasted all of one hole as the veteran Mack parred the first extra hole for the win. For Weaver and McIntyre it was still a good start as Wayne (pictured above) found out that he can compete in the C flight after moving up from D flight. And Chas is recovering from surgery on a broken arm that has limited his play for the better part of a year. So, congratulations to all of them on their effort at Black Bear.
The D flight is small, but competitive. Newcomer Chuck Reed won his first event by shooting a 95. Ian Halliwell was second with 98 and 2 more players, Jerry Harris and James Rearden shot 99.
In the senior flights, Dennis Brady, Steve Maddox and Joe Ondo all carded 74's to tie for first in the senior Championship flight. Brady won the playoff on the first extra hole. Senior A belonged to reigning Player of the Year Robbie Robinson who finished with 81. It was good for a three stroke win over Mike Lombardo. Rick Whitman's 84 was good enough for first place in senior B flight. Dan Lambdin was next at 86 and Johnn Pringle was third with 88.
The Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour is the first Florida affiliate of the egolf Amateur Tour. There are local tours operating in thirty-eight cities with total membership of over 3000 nationwide.
The Senior (50 & up) flights will continue play on Saturdays with the regular flights. Senior players may choose to compete simultaneously in Regular flights for an additional surcharge. Senior players will qualify for the senior national tournament in November, held in Pinehurst, NC.

Grand Cypress and Mission Inn Resort Also Return to Schedule

The Edwin Watts Golf Amateur Tour will return to tradition and open its 2010 season on March 20 at Black Bear GC in Eustis. The tour opened every season at Black Bear until 2006.
Fifteen tournaments are scheduled on some of the finest courses in central Florida. "Last year we played a terrific schedule; this year our lineup is every bit as good" said Tom Mirus, Tour director. "We will be taking the tour to some different courses this year. We are returning to Grand Cypress, Grande Pines and Mission Inn Resort after several years of visiting other courses. We are excited about the coming season. We will again qualify fifty players (10 from each of the five flights) for the Tour Championship in October. It is being held in Hilton Head, SC now and the players that made the trip last year loved it. I am sure competition for the invitations will be strong again this year. Plus, our players competed for nearly $50,000 in prizes last year."

2009 saw the Edwin Watts Tour continue its reputation as central Florida’s "Tour of Choice." Forty-five players represented Orlando at the national finals in Hilton Head, SC. They were part of a 551-player field spread across the six beautiful courses at Palmetto Dunes Resort and Palmetto Hall.
Chad Frank (Sanford) placed 6th in Championship Flight. Other top finishers were Bill Shufelt (Merrit Island) T9 in Championship flight, Jonathan Stuart (Gainesville) 9th in A flight, Steve Cleary (Orlando) T6th in B flight, Wayne Weaver (Apopka) T7th and Tim Sobitz III (Oviedo) T7th, both in D flight.
In November eithteen senior players traveled to Pinehurst, NC to represent the tour in the senior national tournament played at the National GC/Pine Needles/Mid Pines courses. Craig Stone (Melbourne) captured the National Senior title in B flight. Arnie Guerra tied for 9th in B flight. Chip Petersen (Melbourne) finished 10th in Championship flight.
The website (www.ewtorlando.com), provides tour visibility and awareness, providing easy access for members and new players wishing to join in the fun. Membership continues to grow and tournaments averaged near 100 players in 2009. The Order of Merit points list determines the invitations to the national tournament as well as Player of the Year in each flight. In 2009, Chad Frank (Sanford), Matt Tickle (Apopka), and Steve Cleary (Orlando) earned Player of the Year in the Championship, A, and B flights respectively. Dan Seidenfaden (Altamonte Springs) took the C flight and Wayne Weaver (Apopka) took the D flight. Dan Gladman (Sanford) and Robbie Robinson (Kissimmee) captured the Senior Championship & Senior A flight awards, respectively. Tim Sobitz (Oviedo) took the Senior B title.
The tour was founded in 1997. Every year the fields get stronger and the quality of play increases. The best players are playing this tour. Director Tom Mirus points out that "over 1/3 of our membership play with a 4.0 index or better and another 1/3 are between 4.1 and 9.0." Players come from Tampa to Cocoa Beach and from Jacksonville to Ft. Lauderdale to compete. Take your game to a new level!

Craig Stone Takes Senior National Title in B Flight at Tour Championship in Pinehurst
 Senior Team Orlando 2009
Craig Stone (pictured at left) captured the B flight Senior National Championship at the 11th annual Harris Teeter Amateur Golf Tour Championship. The event was held in Pinehurst, NC. Competing on courses at the National Golf Club and Pine Needles, Stone posted rounds of 79-77-156 for a four stroke victory over Joe Prairie of Pinehurst (80-80-160). Three others were another stroke back at 161.
Eighteen Orlando players made the trip to compete in Pinehurst. All flights played one round on National Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus designed course. The A and C flights played one round on Mid Pines and the Championship and B flights played one round on Pine Needles.
"I was either good or bad" said Stone. "I shot 43 on my first nine the first day and 41 on the first nine of the final round. But each day I settled down and finished very well. I only made one birdie, but I did make quite a few pars.". He said that he didn't have any really bad breaks all week and just managed to stay out of trouble. "It was boring at times" he quipped. It was a pleasant surprise for Craig as his lowest score on tour this year was 86 before the trip to Pinehurst.
Arnie Guerra, also in the B flight, finished tied for 9th with rounds of 81-82-163. It capped a good season for Arnie. He finished fourth in the Player of the Year standings in 2009. B flight Player of the Year Tim Sobitz finished with 88-81-169 and a T20 finish.
In the other flights, Chip Petersen led the Championship flight players with a T10 finish on rounds of 73-77-150. He lost out on a prize in the scorecard pllayoff. Player of the Year Dan Gladman posted 78-75-153 for a T21 finish. In the A flight, Alan Neal and Ed Paterniti posted 36-hole totals of 172.
James Pratt and Larry English represented the C flight. James posted 94-91-185 and Larry scored 97-93-190. Alan Neal and Chip Petersen won skins during Wednesday's final round. Here are the complete Orlando results and the team scoresl

Team Orlando Finishes 4th; 7 Players Win Prizes at Tour Championship in Hilton Head
 Team Orlando 2009
Chad Frank tees off in Saturday's first round
Chad Frank, the 2007 egolf Tour Champion led Orlando with a 6th place finish in the Championship flight. He shot rounds of 71-81-152. Bill Shufelt finished T9 on 71-83-154 (he lost the scorecard match for the 9-10 prizes). Wayne Zeigler shared the first round lead with Frank and Shufelt (71), then slipped on Sunday to finish T21 with 71-87-158. Only 10 of the 92 players were able to break 80 on the Robert Cupp course at Palmetto Hall on Sunday as the course played long and the pins were very hard to get to.
 Jonathan Stuart, A-Flight, 9th place
Jonathan Stuart was the low Orlando player in A-flight. He fell well off the pace on Saturday with an opening round of 88, but then follwed up on Sunday with a fine 74 at the picturesque Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes. It was the second lowest score in A flight for the day and propelled him to a 9th place finish. Andy Baker and David Parker were next for Orlando with 36-hole scores of 165, good for a T16 finish.
 Steve Cleary, B-Flight, T6
In B flight Steve Cleary, 2009 Player of the Year, led the way with rounds of 84-83-167. It was good for a T6 finish. Paul Cope also finished in the money with rounds of 86-83-169 and a T10 finish. Four Orlando players also won skins in the B flight. On Saturday it was John Pringle and Tim Sobitz who walked with good skins. Sunday saw Subernia Johnson and Steve Cleary cash in.
James Pratt at Robert Trent Jones course
The C flight found the going much tougher. James Pratt and Chace Petersen were the top performers. They finished T12 with two-day totals of 190. Petersen also won a skin on Saturday. Sunday was a difficult day as the lowest scores for the Orlando C flight were a 94 and 96.
Wayne Weaver & Tim Sobitz III, D-Flight, T8
D flight produced two top ten finishes. Player of the Year Wayne Weaver and Tim Sobitz III finished tied for 8th (Wayne won the match of scorecards). Wayne posted steady rounds of 95-91-186. Tim opened on Saturday with 98, but then followed that up with a solid 88 on Sunday to move into the top ten.
The team from the egolf Louisiana North tour captured the team trophy at the egolf Tour Championship in Hilton Head, SC. Orlando finished in 4th place, 23 strokes back (not a big difference when you consider that 20 scores are used for the team score over 2 days).
Forty-six players from across the five flights represented the Edwin Watts Amateur Tour in Hilton Head. It was a great experience and the courses were in good condition along with the best weather we have had in several years at the finals. Congratulations to all the Orlando players who qualified and took the time and effort to participate. Here are the Orlando scores, followed by the team results:
